Sliema Wanderers Land a Marquee Signing: Teddy Teuma Comes Home

Sliema Wanderers have pulled off arguably the biggest transfer coup of Malta’s summer window, officially unveiling Malta international midfielder Teddy Teuma on a deal reported as either a two-year or three-year contract depending on the source (The Maltese Herald; maltafootball.com). For a club looking to shake off a trophyless, Europe-less 2025/26 campaign, the arrival of a 32-year-old with 49-51 caps for Malta and years of experience in France and Belgium is exactly the statement of intent supporters have been craving.

Who Is Teddy Teuma?

Born in France, Teuma’s career reads like a European football road trip. He came through the French lower leagues with Hyères, Boulogne and Red Star before making his name at Union Saint-Gilloise, where he was eventually handed the captain’s armband. After four seasons in Brussels, he moved to Stade de Reims, becoming the first Maltese player ever to feature in Ligue 1 — a genuine milestone for Maltese football. In January 2026 he switched to Standard Liège, but medical concerns and limited game time (nine appearances, one assist) meant Standard chose not to extend his contract.

That left him a free agent this summer, with reported interest from Greek clubs and a fleeting look from Royal Antwerp. Instead, he chose to come home — and notably, this will be his first-ever spell playing in Malta’s own top flight, after a career built entirely in France and Belgium.

Why Sliema, Why Now

Sliema finished fifth last season, missing continental football, and the club has been vocal about rebuilding around serious talent. President Walter Arciola called Teuma’s arrival “one of the major transfers that Sliema did till today,” pairing it with fellow new signings Alex Satariano and Henry Bonello as evidence of the club’s ambitions.

Teuma himself has been unambiguous: “I’m delighted to join Sliema Wanderers and be part of this project,” he said at his unveiling, adding he’s returned to Malta “with one clear objective — to help the club challenge for silverware”. He’s also spoken directly to fans: “I can’t wait to meet all the fans, give everything for this shirt and hopefully achieve great things together”.

The announcement also coincided with a new long-term sponsorship deal with Betsson, whose logo will now appear on Sliema’s shirts — a sign the club is investing in commercial infrastructure alongside the squad.

What to Expect

At 32, Teuma isn’t the player of five years ago, but a technically gifted, left-footed midfielder with 50-plus Malta caps brings composure, leadership and genuine top-flight European pedigree to the dressing room. If new coach Branko Nisevic can build a settled system around him, this could be the signing that turns a mid-table finish into genuine title contention.
